TechCrunch, MobileCrunch,..SoftCrunch – coming soon

I was wondering today whether there would possibly be a market for another of Mike Arrington’s golden babies, after TechCrunch (USA, France, China, etc.), TalkCrunch, CrunchNotes, CrunchBoard, & MobileCrunch, dedicated to software in particular. Obviously, it would’ve been called SoftCrunch.

So, I thought I was clever and felt like booking the SoftCrunch domain name. Too late! It looks they’re in the process of building the website already (check it here, “Coming Soon” it says). I’m not sure the website was booked by Arrington though, since a quick ‘Who is’ search revealed the registrar’s actually from the UK (by TechCrunch UK, maybe?), with server hosting based in Stockholm, Sweden, and Amsterdam, NL.

If well executed and not too “daily reviews”-like, SoftCrunch can really become a category killer. Today, in order to grasp what’s going on on the software market, you need to visit between 5 and 10 websites (including Tech IT Easy of course, it goes without saying I presume). There’s no clear leader in software blogs, unlike Internet or cooking blogs for instance.

you don’t get the sense that GigaOM and Techcrunch had their great glory year?

They seem to be turning into giant Internet News Boards

web2.0’s come and gone, and everyone’s just hanging around. Waiting.

    Hi GGW,

I disagree with you. Who’s talking about glory or even Web 2.0?

GigaOM and TechCrunch have never claimed to be Web 2.0 ventures. Actually, producing content, like running a blog, is a very Web 1.0 thing. True TechCrunch is an Internet newsboard, not always providing thorough analyses. But believe it or not, alongside with Orli Yakuel’s Go2Web2 (see my blogroll), this is where people go and read information about what’s going on on the World Wide & Wild Web.

On top of this, I’m calling for a SoftCrunch because I believe we lack something like a good software news board (like TechCrunch, which is a damn good Internet news board). Could you maybe refer one to me? Many thanks in advance.

By the way, cool blog you have. Just discovered it (especially your Digital Tribe & 7 digital sins posts), great job. You greatly combine depth in view point and humour.

…or we use Occam’s razor, what if softcrunch.com is just registered by someone else and “coming soon” is just a placeholder for… nothing. Considering that the domain was registered in 2005 and is actually expiring in couple of months, it doesn’t look like it has anything to do with techcrunch et al. =)

Yep Kari, good idea. I’ll try to buy the domain name as soon as it’s available.

Thanks Kari…I received a phone call from a friend that read today my blog for the very first time. On top of her harsh criticism of me blogging in English and not in beautiful French, she absolutely wanted an explanation of what Occam’s razor is (you use that expression).

Here is the explanation so that nobody calls me again (if Google exist, why don’t you use it ;-) ):

Occam’s Razor = when there are two equally likely solutions to one problem, the less complex of these explanations is usually the correct one.
